file Annoying 'workspace' folder created on startup

5 years 4 months ago #2324 by magnus
I have installed the latest version of Modelio (3.0.1) on Linux Mint 64-bit. Every time I start Modelio, a folder 'workspace' is created in my home folder. This folder does not have anything to do with my Modelio workspace folder (that is in another location), but it seems to store metadata for Eclipse.

How can I force this metadata to be stored somewhere else? I don't want it in my home folder. I cannot find any options related to this in the program, nor any command line flags other than those to set the Modelio workspace on startup.

Hi Magnus,

Here's what you can do:

- create a launcher for Modelio
- edit the launcher with your favourite text editor
- add the following line: Path=/wherever/you/want
- save

Now when you start Modelio from your launcher, the workspace directory will be created in the directory you've chosen.

Example:

[Desktop Entry]
Version=1.0
Type=Application
Terminal=true
Icon[en_US]=gnome-panel-launcher
Name[en_US]=Modelio3.0.1
Exec=/home/osl/modelio3/modelio -consoleLog
Name=Modelio3.0.1
Icon=/home/osl/pix/Logo.png
Path=/wherever/you/want

Best regards,

I followed your instructions but the problem remains. I have verified that it is actually the launcher that launches the program. I have tried giving the launcher different paths, but it makes no difference whatsoever.

I noticed that it also creates a folder modelio in my home folder.

There are three directories created automatically in your home:

1. a (hidden) ".modelio" folder.
This one contains Modelio stuff (modules catalog and log files mainly) and cannot be moved. It will be recreated if deleted.

2. a "modelio/workspace" folder
This is the default workspace. You can force another one as shown below in green:

[Desktop Entry]
Version=1.0
Type=Application
Terminal=true
Icon[en_US]=gnome-panel-launcher
Name[en_US]=Modelio3.0.1
Exec=/home/osl/modelio3/modelio -consoleLog -workspace /path/to/my/workspace
Name=Modelio3.0.1
Icon=/home/osl/pix/Logo.png
Path=/wherever/you/want

(note that you don't have to use a launcher to change workspaces, you probably already did it with the user interface)

Next time you run Modelio, it will connect to the new workspace and you'll be able to remove the default "/home/user/modelio/workspace" one.

3. a "workspace" folder containing the ".metadata" one
To get rid of that one, you need to:
1. remove it
2. set a "Path=" entry in the launcher with another location

Have you manually removed the folder?

Hello,

On a similar subject: is there a way or a workaround to configure Modelio to use a different path for the first folder you mention, the ".modelio" folder?

Because I wanted to use Modelio at work, but we have very limited quotas in our home folder under Windows, and each time I start Modelio this folder is created (C:\Documents and Settings\<myUsername>\.modelio), and since it takes 70Mo, my quota is exceeded and I have to suppress the folder before logging off.

thanks,

Sophie
