Source code modifications

Hi,
I'm currently a french student and I have to create a java project that involves modifying an open source UML modeling software to create custom state charts.
So I thought Modelio because its interface is ergonomic and easy to use.
So I want to create a module that would be able to create state charts only.
Then in the properties tab I would like to create drop-down lists instead of text boxes in order to retrieve actions / trigger / event.
These actions / events would be listed in a API file (an xmi file for example).
So I would like to know where should I start because I don't know Modelio well yet.
Other students have managed to make the project by modifying ArgoUML and I challenge myself to do it with Modelio to have a more ergonomic interface.
Thanking you in advance for your answers and sorry for my bad English.
Regards,
Marwan
